Finally, Vivo has launched its much-anticipated smartphone— Vivo NEX, at an event in China. The Vivo NEX is the production version of the Vivo Apex concept smartphone that was showcased by the company during the 2018 Mobile World Congress.
The smartphone sports a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED Ultra FullView “Zero Screen” Display panel with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.24 percent and 2316 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. The smartphone comes with a Screen Sound Casting Technology. In layman terms, the speakers are integrated with the screen. Further, all the sensors in the Vivo NEX are hidden under the display.
Because of the narrow bezels, company had to come up with a unique solution for the selfie shooter, and thus, one of the feature of the smartphone is that it comes with a pop-up front-facing camera. The 8MP front-facing camera, when started, makes a sound to notify the user that the camera has started working.
The device also features 3ed-gen in-display fingerprint scanning technology. According to Vivo, the 3rd-gen in-display technology increases the screen unlock time by 10 percent. At the Rear, there’s a dual camera setup which consists of a 12 MP sensor. The primary camera has a Sony IMX363 sensor with 1.4μm pixels, f/1.8 aperture, and four-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and a 5MP secondary sensor.
The Vivo NEX also has Vivo Game Engine, which is made jointly with Tencent Games. The Gaming Engine aims to provide an immersive gaming experience based on software and hardware optimization. The Vivo NEX also features 7.1-channel 3D audio, which is partnered with dtsX. The handset is also equipped with Vivo Hi-Fi V1 System In Package technology for hi-fi quality sound through earphones.
The Vivo NEX smartphone comes in three variants. The top variant, named as Vivo NEX S, is powered by Qualcomm‘s flagship SoC, i.e, Snapdragon 845 along with Adreno 630 GPU, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The mid-end variant is completely identical to the top-end variant except for the internal storage, as it packs 128GB of storage.
The cheapest variant or the base variant among the three, which is known as Vivo NEX A, comes powered by Qualcomm’s recently launched Snapdragon 710 processor, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. All three smartphones are powered by a 4,000mAh battery.
All the three variants come equipped with Vivo’s own voice assistant — Jovi, which works on the AI technology. Jovi supports several functionalities such as smart map reading, translation, scanning, and screen recognition. There’s a dedicated button on the side of the camera that wakes Jovi on the long-press action.
The Vivo NEX comes with company’s newly designed custom Energy UI, running on top of Android Oreo out of the box.
The Vivo NEX will be available in two color options — Ruby Red and Diamond Black. The high-end variant with 8GB of RAM is priced at 4,998 Yuan, while the mid-range device costs 4,498 Yuan. The cheapest of the three with 710 SoC costs 3,898 Yuan. Pre-orders for the smartphone starts from tomorrow in China, and the device is expected to launch next month in India. However, there’s no official confirmation about the same.
