Chinese EV giant BYD has unveiled its 2nd Generation Blade Battery along with a revolutionary FLASH Charging Technology, setting a new benchmark in electric vehicle charging speed.
The company claims the new system can charge an EV from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes and reach 97% charge in only 9 minutes, potentially making EV charging almost as fast as refueling a petrol car.
The announcement was made in Shenzhen, China, by BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu.
5-Minute EV Charging: A New World Record
With the new Blade Battery technology, BYD claims to have solved two major EV problems:
-
Slow charging speeds
-
Poor charging performance in cold weather
The company says its new system can:
-
Charge 10% → 70% in 5 minutes
-
Charge 10% → 97% in 9 minutes
-
Maintain strong charging even in –30°C temperatures
Even in extreme cold conditions, charging from 20% to 97% only takes 3 minutes longer compared to room temperature.
This could significantly reduce range anxiety and long charging queues, especially during peak travel seasons.
Over 1,000 km Range
The new battery will power vehicles like the Denza Z9GT, which can achieve a range of 1,036 km thanks to:
-
A new lightweight vehicle architecture
-
Higher battery energy density
-
Improved thermal efficiency
BYD says the 2nd-generation Blade Battery improves energy density by 5% compared to the first generation while dramatically improving charging speed.
Advanced Thermal and Safety Technology
To manage the extreme charging speeds, BYD has introduced two major innovations:
Lithium-Ion High-Speed Channel
-
Improves ion movement inside the battery
-
Reduces internal resistance
Full-Spectrum Intelligent Thermal Management
-
Controls heat generation
-
Improves heat dissipation
According to BYD, the battery has passed safety tests exceeding China’s national standards, aligning with the company’s philosophy that:
“Safety is the ultimate luxury of new energy vehicles.”
1500 kW FLASH Charging Infrastructure
The ultra-fast charging speeds are made possible by the new BYD FLASH Charger, which offers:
-
1500 kW single-connector charging output
-
Integrated energy storage systems
-
Reduced strain on the power grid
This makes it one of the most powerful EV charging solutions ever developed.
20,000 FLASH Charging Stations Planned
BYD also revealed an ambitious infrastructure roadmap.
The company plans to build:
-
20,000 FLASH charging stations across China
-
Global rollout starting by the end of 2026
These stations will be open to all EVs, not just BYD vehicles.
New “Zero-Gravity” Charging Cable Design
BYD also introduced a unique T-shaped pulley charger design that improves usability.
Key features include:
-
Zero-gravity cable system
-
Cleaner cables that stay off the ground
-
Easier connector handling from either side of the vehicle
This aims to solve common complaints about public chargers being heavy, messy, and inconvenient.
BYD’s Vision: The “Three Green Dreams”
The technology launch is part of BYD’s long-term vision called the “Three Green Dreams”, introduced in 2006.
This strategy focuses on:
-
Solar energy
-
Battery storage
-
Electric mobility
With the new Solar-Storage-Charging (SSC) FLASH ecosystem, BYD aims to accelerate the global transition to electric mobility.
Why This Matters
If BYD’s claims hold true in real-world usage, this technology could dramatically change EV adoption by:
-
Eliminating long charging times
-
Improving winter performance
-
Making EV charging as convenient as refueling
The 2nd-Gen Blade Battery and FLASH Charging technology could become one of the most important breakthroughs in EV technology in recent years.
