Mahindra has finally launched the Alturas G4 in India at Rs 26.95 lakh. Essentially a rebadged second-gen Ssangyong Rexton, the Alturas is available with a 2-Wheel Drive variant and a top-spec 4-Wheel Drive variant that costs Rs 29.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) – introductory prices.

Alturas means pinnacle or height, which is quite an apt name for the new SUV as the new Alturas G4 is the biggest and the most premium SUV to be launched by Mahindra yet. In India, the Mahindra Alturas G4 will rival the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu MU-X.

The Alturas is larger than its predecessor, the Rexton, and measures 4,850mm in length, 1,960mm in width, 1,825mm in height and has a 2,865mm long wheelbase. The ground clearance too, at 244mm is higher than the Rexton.

Power on Alturas G4 comes from a new 2.2-litre diesel engine by Ssangyong which puts out 180.5hp at 4000rpm and 420Nm of torque at 1600-2600rpm. The SUV uses a 7-speed Gtronic automatic gearbox. G4 is also equipped with a shift-on-fly four-wheel drive system that can be operated via a round chrome knob situated behind the gear lever.

The Alturas G4 features HID headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps, along with an aggressive front bumper which comes with a second set of LED DRLs which act as cornering lamps as well. The SUV also features a new grille, which signature Mahindra look with bold vertical chrome slats and the brand logo at the centre of it.

Other features on the top-spec of the car include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch multi information display, quilted nappa leather seats, electronic parking brake, a sunroof, a 360-degree camera, HID headlamps with LED DRLs, powered tailgate and a two-zone climate control. Also, the driver’s seat gets memory function and power adjustability.

The Alturas G4 will be sold from Mahindra’s new World of SUVs showrooms. The G4’s 4WD AT is significantly cheaper than its rivals and does undercut its rivals, the Ford Endeavour which costs Rs 32.81 lakh and the Toyota Fortuner which costs Rs 32.97 lakh for the 4WD automatic variants.
